Summary
Billy Wiles' normal life begins to spiral downward as the serial killer torments him. He torments Billy initially by attaching a note to his car outside of The Tavern quote, "If you don't take this note to the police and get them involved, I will kill a lovely blond school teacher ... If you do take this note to the police, I will instead kill an elderly woman active in charity work." Billy showed Lanny the note and he told him to keep it, although it was probably just a prank. Things got serious when another note popped up again saying, "If you don't go to the police ... I will kill an unmarried man who won't much be missed by the world. If you do ... I will kill a young mother of two..." They then thought about the 'lovely blond school teacher' who had actually been murdered that night, like the note said, and Billy got scared. He wanted to go to the police, but Lanny talked him out of it. They made a deal, that Lanny would take the new note with him and eventually go to the sheriff about it once he figured out a plan, because he was scared he would lose his job considering he already wasn't a hard worker. Billy went home to find his front door wide open, with no forced entry, so he assumed it was Lanny because the first note was gone. Lanny had taken both of the notes so he could save his own job by eliminating the evidence. If the sheriff's department found out they held back information he could lose his job. Billy decides to go to Lanny's house to find out what was going on, and finds him dead. Lanny Olsen was the unmarried man that wouldn't be missed much by the world. By destroying the notes and not notifying the police, Lanny Olsen had, in a sense, killed himself. Billy was worried he would be blamed for the murder and everyone would think he was crazy or lying, so he threw Lanny's body down a lava pipe. Billy could never get himself out of this mess unless he found the killer. Through out the entire story this unknown killer is playing games with Billy and he gets sucked right into it. So far 4 people are killed. While all of this is happening in the span of 3 days Steve Zillis is still being investigated by Billy and he eventually interrogates Zillis after breaking into his home. Zillis confessed nothing besides the twisted form of art he harvested in his home. Billy left Zillis tied up in his home after reaching no conclusion. He decided to do more research about him and comes across a name that looked familiar: Valis. Valis was an artist who had just recently came to town in order to create a display of art. Zillis was one of Valis' students at an art school when he was in college. Billy knew at that moment they were in on the whole thing, so he went to the art site where Valis stayed in an RV. Billy ended up killing him and throwing him down the lava pipe along with another man that either Valis or Steve had killed in his own home. Billy goes to check on his wife because Zillis must've gotten untied by then. The freak was going to take Barbara in an ambulance somewhere, but luckily Billy saved her in time. Instead, Billy himself took Zillis in the ambulance to the lava pipe and throws him in. Barbara is safe and Billy is no longer playing a twisted killing game. In all the chaos Billy ended up finding his old self. He realized that Barbara was what kept him going even though she was no longer coherent.
